The Chosen

American streaming video company VidAngel has recently launched an episode-based online series that shows the life of Jesus Christ through the eyes of those who encountered Him.

Titled The Chosen, the online series is reported to be a multi-season show that attempts to recreate the time of Christ during the 1st-century Middle East. Its first season, now available for streaming online, captures the lives of Jesus’ followers––like Nicodemus, Matthew, and Simon––before they met Christ and found their true calling.

“We believe if you see Jesus through the eyes of those who actually met Him, you can be impacted and changed in the same way,” says director Dallas Jenkins in an interview.

“The best way to do that would be in the format of a multi-season show, where we can really take the time to get to know and identify with the characters, and dig deeper into these great Gospel stories,” he added.

When asked about the actors who will be portraying the roles of the characters in the series, Jenkins says that the production prioritizes authenticity of casting more than their actor’s scope of influence or following.

“We’re not looking for celebrities,” he says. “We’re also making sure we’re as authentic as possible to the location and time period, so the only Caucasians are the Roman soldiers.”

Team Effort

With Jenkins’ promising vision for The Chosen, VidAngel saw the need to make the online series a reality. However, with their limited budget, the streaming company had to come up with creative ways to raise funds and gather support for the production.

“They had the idea of raising the money through crowdfunding, which I thought was ridiculous,” Jenkins said. “But I had nothing to lose, and I thought these guys were some of the smartest I’ve come across. So, we agreed to jump into the deep end together,” he added.

So far, VidAngel was able to break records by raising more than $10 million worth of funding from 16,000 investors. While the amount seemed to be enough to support the first season of the series, Jenkins says that they still need more funds to sustain the upcoming seasons.

This is why they put up the episodes of The Chosen for sale online.

The first half of season one, now available for streaming, can be accessed for a minimum amount of $30. It comes with a free pilot episode to give viewers an idea of what the series is about.
