Lolo Kiko’s Tagalog Tweets

Did you know that Pope Francis is a member of the Twitterverse, too? His official account, @pontifex, has more than 17 million followers and has always been active since 2012. He uses the platform to constantly extend his message to everyone across the globe and spread his words of positivity.

One of the most memorable instances of Pope Francis using the microblogging site was when he visited the Philippines in 2015. He posted tweets in Tagalog, creating a buzz across the Twitter world where nearly 9.5 million Filipino users exist.

On the Church

About an hour before met hundreds of Filipino families for the first time, Pope Francis tweeted, “the Philippines bear witness to the youthfulness and vitality of the Church.” This was followed by a Tagalog version which later on became the Pope’s most retweeted tweet for January 2015.

On the Importance of Family

On the evening of January 16, 2015, after he met around 20,000 Filipino families, Pope Francis again tweeted in English and then Filipino. This time, his tweet was to reiterate his message about protecting one’s family against ideologies that could possibly destroy it.

On Helping the Needy

On January 18, 2015, Lolo Kiko once again tweeted in Tagalog. He reminded everyone of their responsibilities to help and serve those who are in need.

On Keeping the Faith

On January 17 and 18, 2015, Pope Francis tweeted twice in Tagalog. Both tweets reminded Filipinos of God’s existence. They also encouraged everyone to keep nourishing their Faith.

Did you know? Pope Francis was actually the first pontiff whose election was announced on Twitter! His predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, was elected in 2005, a year before Twitter was founded.
