Young cancer patients at the Philippine General Hospital’s (PGH) Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Clinic will now be greeted with a warm and more welcoming ambience after the clinic recently underwent a major renovation that includes characters from the all-time movie favorite, “Star Wars.”
According to Dr. Ana Patricia Alcasabas, section head of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology in PGH, they’d been wanting to renovate the out-patient clinic as early as 2016. She says that the previous state of the clinic–with its “dirty, dilapidated floors”–was far from being conducive for the children’s healing. “We wanted a clinic environment that promotes wellbeing and positive energy,” she said.
PGH partnered with Globe Telecom and the local branch of The Walt Disney Company to pursue the renovation project that would breathe new life into the clinic. The project, which started in 2016, was conceptualized in line with Globe Telecom’s Star Wars-themed Create Courage campaign, which aims to inspire children to face adversities with a strong heart.
Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications, says that the company is happy to have contributed in this initiative. “We hope that through this project, we can all bring hope to the patients at the PGH Pediatric Hematology – Oncology clinic,” he said.
Now that the newly renovated clinic had officially been turned over to the PGH management, Dr. Alcasabas says that the colorful interior makes “happy distractions” for their young patients. “The space ship designs on the ceiling provide a positive distraction for them (from anxiety and fear), as they await the anesthesiologist and oncologist. The doctors too and some adult patients are also pleased with the center’s new look and feel. It’s a happy place that gives comfort,” she said.
