Pinoy-made app wins international award at the 2018 NASA Space Apps Challenge

ISDApp, a Pinoy-made application that helps fishermen plan ahead and optimize their catch, has won the “Galactic Impact” category in the 2018 National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Space Apps Challenge, the world’s biggest hackathon competition held in the US.

The announcement was made last Saturday, February 16, through the (NASA) Space Apps Challenge website.

According to the iNON (short for “It’s Now or Never”) team composed of Revbrain Martin, Jeddah Legaspi, JC Torreda, Matthew Concubierta, and Migs De Guzman, they created ISDApp with the intention of helping underprivileged fishermen who do not have access to smartphones and internet by providing them with daily SMS updates on weather conditions, sunrise and sunset schedules, cloud coverage, and wind speed. The app also has features like storm alerts and an SOS signal that the fisher folk can use in case of emergency.

“Many of our fisher folk risk their lives when going out to sea since they have no first-hand information if it is okay to fish. With this [ISDApp], they can be alerted with the state of the weather so they could avoid sailing out,” Revbrain Martin, one of the app developers, said in an interview.

iNON was among the 24 international participants who were handpicked by NASA scientists and experts to compete for the Best Use of Data, Best Use of Hardware, Best Mission Concept, Galactic Impact, Most Inspirational, and Best Use of Science categories. The team, along with the five other category winners, will be invited to visit the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to formally receive their awards.
