Heart Evangelista for Aspins

“Because all creatures are connected, each must be cherished with love and respect, for all of us as living creatures are dependent on one another,” Pope Francis once wrote, showing his deep fondness for animals.

It is this same love for God’s creatures that motivates Filipina actress Heart Evangelista to help our furry friends. A proud animal advocate, she is passionate about helping stray animals—particularly aspins (short for asong pinoy)—get adopted and given a proper home. In fact, she has been working closely with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) for years now in promoting their cause, #AdoptDontShop.

“I’ve been with PAWS for 13 years now and here at the PAWS Animal Shelter, we have a lot of rescued aspins who are victims of cruelty and neglect,” said Heart during last year’s launch of the Have a Heart for Aspins campaign.

“We want to highlight these beautiful aspins so that they can find their forever homes with a family who will love them unconditionally,” the actress added.

This year, however, Heart is taking her animal advocacy to another level.

On Monday, June 3, the 34-year-old actress took to Instagram to announce her plans of building an animal shelter in the province of Sorsogon.

“As you all know, I’ve always had a soft spot for animals and it’s a dream of mine to be able to do more to champion their welfare,” the caption read.

As the post suggests, the animal shelter won’t just provide a home for aspins, it will also give them proper medical care.

“This will be the site of one special endeavor that is near and dear to my heart—building a facility which provides services such as spaying, neutering, tagging, and shots, and a community that welcomes animals and treats them with love,” Heart wrote.

Now “brimming with excitement” as her dreams of providing protection to animals is finally becoming a reality, Heart encourages everyone to follow her cause and to adopt animals instead of buying them.

Count us in, Heart! And good luck—we are excited for your new project!
