I Need A Reason

When I turned 23, I began to spiral downwards. I don’t really know what happened but life just became too unbearable. I attempted to commit suicide three times—but I woke up in the hospital every single time. On my third attempt (I was 25), one of the nurses told me “baka kaya hindi ka namamatay kasi may kailangan ka pang gawin dito sa mundo,” and that hit me hard. When I got out of the hospital, I forced myself to go out and socialize—that’s when I found this group of 20-somethings who teach dance to the out-of-school youth in our barangay. I love to dance so I asked if I could join them. I’ve been with them for a year now. And the good thing about this is after years of battling depression and anxiety disorder, I am finally off medication. –Ryan Macabling

Blessing in Disguise

New Room

I really believe that minor inconveniences are just blessings in disguise. In one case, I was on a tight budget, and looking for a cheap yet decent place to move into that was near my office in Makati. I spent one whole Saturday looking at places, but they were either too expensive or too far. I resigned myself to just driving to and from work for two hours every day. As I was about to head home, my car wouldn’t start. I asked the help of a passerby. While we were charging my car, he asked if I worked around the area. When I said yes, he said I should just rent a place. I said I was looking for one. His face lit up—he was looking for a tenant because his previous one left that morning! We checked the place out—it was sakto with my budget and was near my workplace. What a steal! –Mary Grace Kim

Answered Prayer

Hospital

My 72-year-old mother recently had a stroke. I am an OFW so I was abroad when it happened. I wanted to go home immediately. However, the flights were so expensive and I still had to send money to my siblings for my mom’s medication and hospitalization because I’m the breadwinner of the family. I was so distraught that I couldn’t even work. I always cried in our office comfort room, praying to God for a miracle so I could go home to see my mom. My boss asked me what the problem was so I told him. He gave me a week off with pay so I could go home to the Philippines. My colleagues also chipped in for my flight. I am grateful for these people. They are truly my miracles. –Anna Duquit
