On January 23, the Department of Education (DepEd), in partnership with toilet hygiene brand Domex, launched the Eskwelang Unstoppable Awards. The project is in connection with the #TogetherWeAreUnstoppable that aims to provide access to usable, clean, and safe toilets for seven million Filipino children by 2021.
The Eskwelang Unstoppable Awards will be recognizing schools that adopt the Wash in Schools (WinS) program of DepEd. The WinS program—which highlights the linkage between health and sanitation—aims to improve access to clean water supply, usable toilets, and effective hygiene promotion. It is anchored on teaching Filipino children the significance of good hygiene and sanitation, and the importance of usable toilet facilities in schools.
“This award will encourage schools to adapt sanitation practices,” says Josh Yeo, Domex Brand Manager. He further explains that they hope the program would harness the bayanihan spirit engrained in Filipinos and use it to benefit the millions of children that the program will touch.
The awards will culminate every 19th of November. In it, the best school division and five best practice model schools will be recognized and awarded with a year’s supply of Domex products. “With this event, we aim to change the lives of Filipino children. Sanitation is a right, not a privilege,” Yeo says.
Schools will be scored based on criteria such as toilet facilities, presence of hand soaps in school, and knowledge of students on proper hygiene and good sanitation practices. The full guidelines can be found here.
According to statistics, 84% of teachers and school nurses say toilet-related health issues are greatly affecting student attendance. In his remarks, Ed Sunico, Unilever Philippines Vice President for Sustainable Business and Communication, adds to this statistics. He explains that 400 million school hours worldwide are missed because of sanitation-related absences. “Our goal is to create positive social impact through sustainable projects; Domex’s purpose is to improve hygiene and sanitation,” Sunico states.
