Question:

My son married what they call a “girl boss,” and while I am actually proud of my daughter-in- law and her accomplishments, and my son seems happy, I find her too controlling. I plan on telling her to let my son take the lead for a change. What is the best way to do this so that she will comply?

Advice from My Pope:

If your daughter-in-law is the “girl boss” you say she is, there’s a good chance she won’t appreciate your efforts, and may even view them as a form of meddling. And though you might find it difficult to hold back, just remember the words from Genesis 2:24. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Perhaps it’s time to cut those apron strings and turn your time and energy toward something you enjoy, like a landscaping project or a book club. You’ll find that your efforts in these areas will be much more fruitful. At the same time, since your son seems happy, trust that he is, and feel flattered that he chose a wife who is a strong woman, just like good ol’ mom.
