Apo Whang-Od Receives NCCA Dangal ng Haraya Award

Tattoo artist Apo Whang-Od Oggay received the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Dangal ng Haraya Award for Intangible Cultural Heritage last night, June 25, at the Kalinga Capitol Plaza in Tabuk, Kalinga.

The award is given to living Filipinos for their achievements in their respective fields and their contribution to the country’s arts and culture. Apo Whang-Od is the first traditional or folk artist who was granted with the award.

Previous recipients of the award include the late Sen. Edgardo Angara, writer Susan Calo Medina, architect Augusto Villalon, Senator Loren Legarda, and anthropologist and artist Dr. Jesus Peralta.

Apo Whang-Od, who began her craft at the age of 15, has turned 102 years old last February.
