Musician Ejay Yatco to Co-Create Original Musical with Joel Trinidad

Composer, musical director, and pianist Ejay Yatco will be co-creating an original musical with scriptwriter and lyricist Joel Trinidad. The theatrical production, entitled, “GUADALUPE: THE MUSICAL,” is based on a series of historically unexplained events in 1531 that changed the world forever.

Seems interesting? Here is Ejay Yatco ready to fill us in with more details about the musical:

What about the Guadalupe story strikes you most and why?

“The mystery aspect interests me. This musical is based on historical events that until today remain a mystery. We can never really know what the exact events that transpired were, but they made an impact on the world and garnered a huge following that exists until today. Do miracles really happen or are they simply scientific phenomena that people attribute to a higher power?”

What are some of the challenges you faced in the development of this show?

“One of the biggest challenges is the music being set in the 1500s. I had to do a lot of research on what Aztec music and 16th century Spanish music sounded like, for inspiration. Then I had to combine these elements into the musical theatre structure and at the same time add my own signature sound.”

Why do you think you were chosen to write the music for this show?

“To be honest, this show is very out of my element. I’m used to writing contemporary and edgy material rather than history-based period pieces. But I guess it’s fate that they chose me for this project: My mother is an avid follower of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She had a shrine built for her when I was young, so I decided to accept the project for her.”

What can audiences expect from GUADALUPE: THE MUSICAL?

“Everything you’re looking for in an epic musical is here: love, drama, action, battle scenes, catchy songs, etc. This is a heartwarming musical with a beautiful message that the whole family will enjoy.”

Directed by Baby Barredo, “GUADALUPE: THE MUSICAL” stars stage icon Cocoy Laurel as Juan Diego. It will be presented by the Julie Borromeo Arts Foundation from September 28 to October 14 at the Meralco Theater, Pasig City.
