Pokemon Go clone inspires Catholics to practice their faith—the millennial way!

Pope Francis blessed a new mobile app that is now being called the “Catholic version of Pokemon Go.” The app, known as Follow JC Go!, aims to teach the younger generation to embrace their faith.

Just like in Pokemon Go, players of Follow JC Go! use their smartphone cameras to take in their surroundings and catch superimposed digital characters. The only difference is that in this game, players are out in search of not Pikachu, but of Saint Peter!

Follow JC Go! players progress by answering religious quiz questions posed by the saints and other biblical characters they “meet.” For instance, if a player gets to correctly answer a question from Moses, his or her character will join their e-team (or Evangelization Team).

Aside from putting its player’s knowledge to the test, Follow JC Go!, also encourages the importance of practicing one’s faith. It has features that prompt users to stop and pray if they pass a church. Or when a player is in a hospital, he or she will be prompted to say a prayer for the sick.

Follow JC Go! was developed by an international team of  Catholic helpers called Fundación Ramón Pané. Ricardo Grzona, the executive director of the foundation, says the app was well-received by the Santo Papa. “You know, [Pope] Francis is not a very technological person, but he was in awe, he understood the idea, what we were trying to do: combine technology with evangelization,” he said in an interview.

According to reports, about 43 designers, theologians, Bible experts, and Church historians poured their expertise in the development of Follow JC Go!. The app was created in preparation for World Youth Day 2019 that will be held in Panama in January 22 to 27.
